Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu GI
The tradition of wearing a gi or kimono as the training attire for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu stems from its roots in Japanese martial arts. In the past, Japanese warriors, or samurais, would often wear kimonos as their regular clothes. A kimono is a robe-like garment with wide sleeves that is tied with a sash.
When it came to training, samurais didn’t want to risk ripping or tearing their regular clothes, so they opted for a durable cotton uniform that could withstand the rigors of training. This uniform, known as a gi, became the essence of the art. It is a nod to the old times when samurais would wear gis as their everyday attire.
That’s why, even today, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is practiced in the gi. It keeps the tradition alive and pays homage to the origins of the art.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu No-GI
No-gi jiu-jitsu originated as a training method for MMA fights. In these fights, the competitors did not wear the traditional gi, so they had to adapt their training accordingly. Over time, training without the gi became popular and evolved into its own sport.
Today, no-gi jiu-jitsu is widely practiced and highly publicized around the world. It has gained a significant following due to its dynamic and fast-paced nature, making it a thrilling and competitive sport.
